Smart Technologies for Traffic

As congestion in urban areas is a major issue, cities are turning to the latest technologies for traffic to increase road safety and decrease wasted energy. This helps both drivers and passengers save time, reduces carbon emissions and delays in traffic.

The technology behind it is based on hardware and software. The first is the executing component, while the latter is the command and control center. Both are enhanced with modern sensing technologies and processing for example, like ANPR (automotive plate recognition) that collects information about vehicle movements and can identify road signs.

Depending on the solution, smart traffic lights may process data on a device or send it to a cloud location. The latter provides more advanced modeling and predictive analysis that can stop traffic congestion and harmonize public transportation schedules. According to Carnegie Mellon University, this can cut the average travel time by 25 percent, wait times for signal signals are reduced by 40% and emissions are reduced by 20%.

A smart traffic light system is not only able to reduce the amount of time traffic signals take to operate and improving the flow of pedestrians as well as of micromobility vehicles, such as e-bikes or electric scooters. This is because they’re not able to follow the traditional preemption rules. In London E-scooter accidents increased by 2,800% over the first quarter of 2021. It is therefore crucial to include them in traffic light control.
