The Data Standard
The world of biotechnology is increasingly driven by data. As the number of biotech companies continue to grow, so does this industry’s need for data scientists, data analysts, and other technologists. With demand for data—and the associated concerns of where to store it, how to process it, and how data pipelines will be structured—on the rise, there will be plenty of opportunities in biotech for those specializing in app development, software engineering, cloud architecture, and other fields.

Senior Director of Data Science at Zymergen
Kurt Thorn is Senior Director of Data Science at Zymergen where his team develop pipelines for analysis of high throughput screening and fermentation data, developing tools for efficient development of high throughput screening plate models, and recommendation engines for identification of protein sequences catalyzing desired enzymatic functions and prediction of beneficial genetic edits for strain engineering. Prior to this Kurt was a professor at UCSF where he developed novel multiplex biochemical assays for disease diagnosis and directed the Nikon Imaging Center @ UCSF/QB3, a highly successful light microscopy core facility, with 300 annual users and 40 papers published per year.
