Vamsi Chandra Kasivajjala, Co-Founder & CTO at Mango Sciences, sits down with TDS to discuss healthcare data.

Episode Summary

While data science provides tools and methods to extract real value from unstructured patient information, it eventually contributes to making healthcare more efficient, accessible and personalized. The number of healthcare institutions making data-driven decisions increases slowly but steadily. At its core, data science in the healthcare industry isn’t too different from data science in other fields—the ultimate goal is to tease out meaningful and actionable insights from collected data. The healthcare sector presents data scientists with more varied opportunities than many other industries, though, from helping individual hospitals be more efficient, to influencing diagnostic and treatment processes, to mapping the spread of a pandemic. In many cases, the results of a healthcare data scientist’s work can be felt far and wide and potentially affect millions of lives. Big Data in healthcare is not unheard of. The healthcare industry is generating a significant source of data in the world. People who have skill sets in health information technology and analytics, the employment rate for them is increasing. The global pandemic has dramatically increased the need as well as the importance of data science and analytics professionals. We have seen over the months how data science professionals have come together and worked on COVID-19 healthcare data and build AI/ML models to track the outbreak and use the information for contact tracing, screening applications and vaccine development.
