While it has been commonly accepted that federated learning holds enormous potential for the commercialization of AI, now there are environmental advantages that are emerging. The author reviews how recent research has demonstrated that federated learning can reduce carbon emissions. As corporations look to deploy more federated algorithms, understanding these environmental ramifications could facilitate further political support and technological adoption.
